Driving down South Carolina roads late at night is often a thrilling experience, especially given the state’s rich history and numerous paranormal hotspots. It was one of the things I enjoyed the most from my youth when a bunch of us would load up in the truck and set out to explore.
Crybaby Bridges are iconic stories typically passed down through generations and are often the first road trip many embark on during the fall of the year for entertainment. We don’t usually cover them because every county in South Carolina has one. The Lantern has written about the Crybaby Bridge in Anderson, but we often get asked about others. Up to this point, we have been hesitant to do so until now.
The Crybaby Bridge in Newberry County, near Union, is particularly eerie due to its proximity to Zombieland, The Hound of Goshen, and other haunted locations. This area is a hotbed of activity, so a trip into this region will surely get the hair to stand on end with goosebumps and maybe even a cold bite on your legs.
This bridge made our list because of the proximity to the ghostly hound himself. The stories surrounding these bridges are usually quite similar. Legend has it that a steel bridge was once in place to provide a safe passage over the water, until a newer one replaced it. A woman with her baby wrapped tightly in her arms plunged from the bridge to her death below. If you walk across this bridge late at night, you can hear the baby crying and the mother walking the bridge in search of the child.
However, the biggest surprise is nearby. Old Buncombe Road is a spooky place at night, and you always have to be on the watch for the happy dog that sits nearby.
