Ninety Six is a small town in Greenwood County, South Carolina, and the name has been a source of mystery and frequently asked questions.

Many theories exist about how the town got its name. One plausible explanation is that the English traders from Charleston who passed through the area in the 1700s estimated the distance from this location to be 96 miles to the Cherokee village of Keowee, near Clemson.
The first known reference to Ninety Six is on a map from 1730.
