The 1906 Asheville, NC Massacre- Will Harris

Asheville is a historic city with numerous apparitions and tunnels beneath its streets. The area would be the first impacted by prohibition in the early 1900s, due to strict laws, compared to other parts of the country that would see the Roaring Twenties usher in dryness.

The mountain city would also become known for a killing spree in 1906 at the hands of Will Harris, a 29-year-old perpetrator who escaped a chain gang in Charlotte before making his way west.

On a morning in November 1906, the community changed forever, as five would become victims of Will Harris’s mass murders. Four died on Eagle Street, with the last gunned down in Pack Square.

In all, two police officers and three bystanders fell to the bloodthirsty criminal with no motive behind the killings.

Today, some refer to Eagle Street as one of the most haunted places in the state that you probably did not know existed.

Apparitions of Harris’ victims can still be seen, heard, and felt along Eagle Street and in the vicinity of Barley’s Taproom.
