Much like Gravity Hill in Richfield, North Carolina, Stewartsville Cemetery Road, outside of Maxton, North Carolina, has earned the same reputation as being haunted by its gravity hill.
The legend says the brakes on a vehicle gave way before stopping at the intersection of Stewartsville Cemetery Road and Old Maxton Road. The mother got out of the vehicle to push the car from the road when an eighteen-wheeler went around the corner, striking the vehicle and killing the mother and child inside.
Supposedly, if you go there, park, and put your vehicle in neutral, it will begin to roll backward. People believe it’s the spirit of the mother pushing the car to safety in the afterlife.
The location is at the corner of Stewartsville Cemetery Road and Old Maxton Road, between Maxton and Laurinburg, North Carolina.
