The Flaming Ship of Ocracoke

On the night of the new moon each September, a strange and ghastly sight can be seen off Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A phantom ship engulfed in flames floats by before disappearing into the night.

The ship was responsible for bringing refugees to the New World in the early 1700s, until crew members began robbing the immigrants while the boat was anchored off the North Carolina coast. Then, the crew set fire to the boat, pulled the anchor, and left the scene, abandoning the ship.

Screams from the immigrants could be heard for miles as the vessel drifted out to sea until it traveled out of sight.

The ghostly ship is said to return annually, moving swiftly through the waters toward the northeast and making an eerie wailing noise.
