The Legend of The Lady of the Lake

Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp is near the North Carolina and Virginia border. The Great Dismal Swamp holds a rich history, numerous secrets, and a few legends.

One that you may be unfamiliar with is the ghostly lovers of Lake Drummond. Legend says that a pair of American Indian sweethearts, who were planning to wed and spend their lives together, may also be spending eternity together.

On the morning of the wedding day, the bride died and was buried in the Dismal Swamp. Her young lover, grief-stricken, became convinced that he could still see her paddling a white canoe across the lake. The man made a makeshift raft, hoping to reach her, but instead drowned.

Ever since, people have claimed to see the two lovers paddling together in a white canoe on Lake Drummond.

Another legend says that people can still see the Lady of the Lake paddling her ghostly white canoe across the waters.
