The legend of the Third Eye Man dates to the late 1940s on the University of South Carolina campus. Some have referred to him as The Sewer Man. On November 12, 1949, a student named Christopher Nichols first observed the creature, dressed in all silver, opening a manhole cover.
Roughly six months later, the Third Eye Man was spotted again by a police officer on the campus who saw mutilated chickens. The officer went to his cruiser to report the scene and saw a strange man with silver skin. When the man turned, the officer saw an oddly colored face with a third eye, located around the Longstreet Theatre.
Another incident occurred when a group of students encountered the figure in the underground utility tunnels, also known as the catacombs.
Today, the story of the Third Eye Man endures in South Carolina’s history and folklore.
