The Headless Woman Still Roams This South Carolina State Park

According to numerous online reports and Sherman Carmichael in his book Strange South Carolina, a headless woman is said to walk along the old road to Sumter in Woods Bay State Park.

The park is off I-95 at exit 146, near Olanta in Florence County. Today, the road is a nature trail, but at one time, wagons used to travel it. If you happen to be in the park, look for the bare trail that is easily recognizable due to its width.

Legend says the body of a woman with a severed head was found here many years ago, before it became the Woods Bay State Park. Unfortunately, her identity remains a mystery, along with her missing head. People have claimed to see the apparition of a headless woman walking along the road where the old mill once sat.

If you visit, maybe you can help her find her missing head.
