Some ghost light tales seem to gain in popularity, like the Maco Light in North Carolina and the Bingham Light in South Carolina, while others seem to fade away over time.
One ghostly story you probably did not know existed is Campbell’s Light in Concord, North Carolina, near Charlotte.
According to Charles F. Gritzner in his book North Carolina Ghost Lights and Legends, he points to an accident on December 4, 1888, when a railroad employee, Alexander Campbell, slipped between two rail cars and was crushed to death by the train.
Two newspapers covered the incident on December 14, 1888, ten days after the tragedy.
Soon after, people began to see a ghostly light at the Concord depot where the accident occurred. According to the Concord Times, “the engineer saw a lantern waving in front of him. He stopped the train when the light went out. He then passed on, looking back, and saw the light again, waving. The train hands refused to go back to examine and believed it was the ghost of the dead brakeman.”
No new sightings of Campbell’s Light have been reported, and it has seemed to vanish, or has it? Is Brakeman Campbell still working here in the afterlife at the site of the old Concord railroad depot?
