Clyde A, Erwin High School, located at 60 Lees Creek Road in Asheville, North Carolina, is allegedly hiding a dark secret beneath its floors and is rumored to be haunted. The ominous humming that echoes through the halls at night, or items moving around on their own, indicate that something is not right in this neighborhood.
A science teacher at the school knew his class for the day needed something fun to do to prepare his students for exam week.
He asked, “Can anyone tell me what gas is released during the decomposition process?” He knew this would capture their attention, especially given the school’s history. A student answered correctly, stating ammonia and methane. The question was for extra credit, as he was trying to make his class more interesting. A student asked abruptly, Are there bodies under the school?
The teacher saw it coming. And then another student asked, Were the bodies removed? Before the present-day Erwin High School was built, the land served as the original County Home Cemetery, founded in the early 1800s, which was built for the poorest citizens, often referred to as a Potter’s field. As a result, not everyone had their grave marked. In 1973, the local school administration sought to construct a new high school on the same plot of land. And like something out of Poltergeist, you guessed it – they moved the gravestones, but some spirits stayed.
“Well, yes.” The science teacher answered. “But not all of them. You see…”
“Are there any ghosts in the school?” Another student asked.
The teacher had had enough. He was not about to have his class turn into a lecture about pseudoscience. Just as he began to shut down the spontaneous Q&A, his projector forcefully slid off the table, causing the glass to shatter on the ground. The teacher went silent. His hands were off the projector. Nobody was touching it. Someone, or something, was upset with his answer.
After all was said and done, as many as 600 bodies were exhumed and moved.
Are the spirits of the deceased still roaming the halls at Erwin High School?
