This Street in Historic Charleston Is Believed To Be The Most Ghost-Infested in the State

Charleston, South Carolina, is considered the most haunted city in the state, and Church Street is reportedly the most haunted area. So much debauchery occurred here from wild parties with excessive amounts of whisky, gambling, and plenty of ladies of the night during the early 1900s that many spirits call it home. It is believed that many lost not only their souls here but also their lives.

Sherman Carmichael speaks of Church Street on page 102 of his book Eerie South Carolina. “Church Street originates at the tip of the peninsula among the mansions of South Battery. Across from the entrance lie the moss-covered oaks on Battery Park, also known as White Point Gardens.”

In 1718, twenty-nine pirates were hanged here from Stede Bonnet’s crew, and some believe their restless spirits still walk the grounds today.

We have visited this area many times, and the Battery is a Must-stop on your trip. It has so much history and paranormal hotspots that you may even run into a few old residents from Charleston’s past, who are eager to meet you.
