The Lost Treasure of Charleston

People often wonder if pirates along the South Carolina coast buried treasure. While many stories will forever live on, especially in the Lowcountry of the state, one such pirate allegedly made his way into Charleston Harbor and a small waterway along present-day Water Street.

Legend has it that he buried his stash in the vicinity of 37 Meeting Street.

The pirate captain returned to check on his loot to find one of his trusted men digging it up. Three versions of the story exist of what occurred.

One says the pirate cut the man’s head off and left him there. Another says the captain shot him. The last version says the pirate rammed him with his sword and left his bones to guard the treasure.

To this day, the backyard at 37 Meeting Street is said to be haunted by that ghost. Many have looked, but the missing treasure remains tucked deep in the pages of Charleston’s Haunted History.
