The Lost Town of Proctor, North Carolina (Death of a Mountain Community)

Western North Carolina is a magical place with a rich history of folklore, mysteries, and legends, such as the lost town of Proctor in Swain County.

Fontana Lake is beautiful, with scenic views of mountains, and situated on the Little Tennessee River. The 480-foot-tall Fontana Dam is the highest dam east of the Rockies, equivalent to a 50-story skyscraper, with the Appalachian Trail crossing it.

Underneath the surface lies the lost town of Proctor, North Carolina, a once-booming lumber town. Proctor and other communities of Hazel Creek were flooded to make way for the new lake in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack for electricity purposes.

Residents were displaced by the construction, with promises from the federal government to build a road to the north shore of the new lake, providing access to other parts of Hazel Creek that remained above the water level. Only seven miles of the promised road were ever built, now known as the Road to Nowhere.
