Legend of the Brown Mountain Lights

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a beautiful destination that many people love, making them a popular choice for day trips or extended vacations. One drive through the twists and turns of Pisgah National Forest with panoramic views will leave you and your family with memories that will last for a lifetime. The calling and lure of the mountains may lead you there, but what is lurking on the ridges and deep in the woods may keep you there.

The Brown Mountain Ridge in North Carolina is a mysterious place for those who enjoy a quick trip to explore and are up for a good scare. It is one of the most haunted places in the state, and for good reason. For decades, people have attempted to explain the mysterious lights in the distance, but to no avail, finding no logical explanation.

So what are these lights? If you had researched the area, you would have found that these lights are part of a phenomenon that has been occurring for over 100 years, known as the Brown Mountain Lights. Nobody knows where the lights come from, but they make their rounds notably at night, preferably just after it rains. Some speculate that the lights belong to the lanterns of Cherokee maidens looking for fallen warriors. Are they still searching into the deadness of night? Others believe the lights are orbs from the ghosts of Civil War soldiers scouring the mountain, lost and looking for a way home in the afterlife.

The Brown Mountain Lights, located near Morganton, are a destination for all. While we may not have many opportunities to gaze at the Northern Lights, we certainly have a prime opportunity to capture the Brown Mountain Lights.

Have you ever experienced a night on Brown Mountain?
