Right off of Chair Factory Road in Whiteville, North Carolina, is a bridge you should avoid before sunrise. Most bridges cross over lakes – this one crosses over a swamp – Monnie Swamp, to be exact. Coming from Old Tram Road, you’ll see two bridges within eyesight of one another. One isn’t much prettier than the other. At any rate, somewhere between these two bridges late at night, it is said that if you stay quiet and perfectly still, you can hear someone’s heartbeat. For the best chance of catching the horrifying sounds, try turning off your car’s lights. As a bonus, the first bridge has a spray-painted pentagram in the middle. Try it first – if you dare!
The stories range from a cab driver murdering someone to chasing a bride with a knife! Regardless of the stories’ differences, they all have one thing in common: A woman was murdered with her heart cut from her chest and then thrown off the bridge into the swamp. In one particular version of the story, a man caught his wife cheating and killed her. After throwing the heart off the bridge, the heart continued to beat, calling the killer back to the location of her body. He then took his own life at the bridge, going mad from the sound of his dead wife’s heart continuously beating louder and louder. Legend has it that the heart will beat so loudly that it forces people to flee from the location.
Is there truth to any of these stories? Well, as it turns out, there was a body that turned up at the very bridge that so many believe is haunted. Allisa Lee, 24, was found dead in April 2023.
